ABOUT ARTEM

Artem A. Medvedev has been a supporter of rich and active public dialogue and debate, as well as greater involvement in social and political life by all, for many years as he considers them necessary for true and lasting democracy. During his high school and undergraduate years, he participated in a number of social, political and environmental campaigns in Russia.
Both before and since immigrating to Canada, Artem has been working in the area of student rights and campus development, serving in various capacities on university boards and student groups and advocating for greater access to higher education, academic freedom and greater engagement between the campus and the society at large. Artem is also committed to making our communities safer, establishing universal access to high-quality healthcare, preserving the planet for future generations, and ensuring respect for human rights and freedoms throughout the world.
Currently, Artem works as a Research Assistant at the University of Alberta and is also a partner at a small communications consulting business. Since coming to Canada, Artem has been an instructor of Russian at the university, as well as a mailroom clerk, an administrative assistant, a call-centre agent, a tutor, and a security guard. Artem enjoys volunteering and has devoted his time to assisting newcomers to Alberta as well as public education about his native culture and language.
He is passionate about teaching, communicating, and learning. In his free time, he enjoys reading, listening to good music, travelling around Alberta, taking long walks, spending time with his family and friends, and playing with his cat.
Artem is a PhD Candidate (Slavic Linguistics) at the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of Alberta. He successfully passed his candidacy exams in the summer of 2009 and started working on his doctoral thesis. Artem's personal research interests lie in the field of political language, the language of parliament and political parties in particular. He earned his Master’s degree (Applied Linguistics) from the University of Alberta in 2007 and received his undergraduate diploma (Teaching foreign languages, linguistics and translation) from Tver State University, Russia in 2005.
Artem was born in Volgograd, Russia in a family of professional educators and had lived in several cities in Russia, as well as the United States, while accompanying his parents on an academic exchange program, before he immigrated to Canada and came to Alberta in 2004. Artem was granted Canadian citizenship in 2008. In July 2009 his wife and he moved to the Riverbend area of Edmonton.
Artem Medvedev was chosen as the new candidate for the NDP in the federal riding of Edmonton-Leduc on Oct. 29th, 2009.
